Every person has a dream. And in a society like that of the GDR, you sometimes have to take unusual paths to fulfil your dreams. This is also what young Suzie (Marlene Burow) learns as she tries to find her own happiness despite social constraints in In a Land That No Longer Exists.
Suzie is about to graduate from high school in East Berlin in 1989 when she is kicked out of school and suddenly has to fend for herself. On her way to her job as a skilled worker at the Oberspree cable factory, she is photographed by chance. That's how the photo ends up on the cover of the East German women's magazine "Sibylle" and Suzie becomes a sought-after model overnight. A whole new world opens up for the young woman. A world full of dazzling personalities and exciting opportunities - past the socialist daily routine in the factory. She meets the eccentric Rudi, who designs his own fashion in the Berlin underground for the city's hedonistic scene. There is also the photographer Coyote, who takes extraordinary, seductive photographs that are, however, never printed in magazines. For the three of them, their encounter is the beginning of a very special summer full of love and togetherness, but also pain and loss.
