A love letter to the power of analog cinema against the backdrop of the Chinese Cultural Revolution.
Told against the backdrop of China's Cultural Revolution in the 1970s, the thrilling and emotional chase for a newsreel, a news film that used to be played before cinema screenings, unwinds here. When the whole village community comes together to clean up a damaged roll of film, one senses the power that celluloid could have, and still can have, over society. The new film by China's flagship director Zhang Yimou (Hero) was supposed to run in the Berlinale competition in 2020, but was briefly withdrawn due to "technical problems". Based on the Novel "The Criminal Lu Yanshi" by Yan Geling.
