Just in time for Valentine's Day, we are showing two films that were made with great attention to detail and have finally found each other. Both small genre films from Japan, both consist of one long plan sequence each, so they get by without a single cut. Cleverly written and directed with so much joy: Love is all you need!
One Cut of the Dead カメラを止めるな! 2017, Japan, Ueda Shin'ichiro & Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes ドロステのはてで僕ら 2020, Japan, Yamaguchi Junta
One Cut of the Dead opens in a run-down, abandoned warehouse where a film crew are making a zombie film. Yet this is no ordinary warehouse. It’s been said that it’s the site of military experiments on human. From nowhere, real zombies arrive & terrorize the crew. This may sound like a the plot of a clichéd zombie film, but One Cut of the Dead is something completely different: Starting off with a non-stop one-take 37 minute shot, the film then completely switches direction & turns the zombie genre completely upside down into a charming, audience-friendly comedy with an ending you won’t see coming!
Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes: Café owner Kato discovers that his PC monitor shows what will happen two minutes in the future. Another screen downstairs in his café shows the past of two minutes ago. His friends decide to place the two mysterious devices opposite each other, which creates a loop to see into the future. Naturally, chaos ensues. Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes is a delightfully light hearted flick shot in one take about five innocent heartwarming friends who discover the art of time traveling!
