Director Ari Aster has compared his nearly three-hour film to the epic journey of Odysseus, which took him 20 years to return home as a beggar. Every homecoming is also a homecoming to the mother. But what is an odyssey when the mother has never let the son go, when mobile phones, surveillance cameras and the psychoanalyst accompany every step? Beau's fear of leaving is as great as his fear of returning, his journey becomes an escape from persecution, and cultural forms and historical dimensions of fear become clear.
