When human body parts are found on several coal heaps in northern China in 1999, the suspects are quickly identified. But when they are arrested, a shoot-out ensues in which the alleged perpetrators and two police officers are killed. The chief inspector, Zhang Zili, is seriously injured. Five years later, he has resigned from the police force and is addicted to alcohol. When his former colleague tells him about a case with astonishing parallels to the murders of that time, Zhang sets out on his own to investigate.
