The crook Michel Poiccard, pursued by the police after stealing a car, shoots one of them and flees. Back in Paris, he finds an American girlfriend. He persuades her to go to Italy with him. But the police have discovered the identity of the murderer and are on his trail.
Michel Poiccard is a crook, a rebel, a daredevil. He is on his way to Paris in a stolen luxury limousine. Because he was exceeding the speed limit at a construction site, two policemen on motorbikes chase him and stop him. A policeman recognises and confronts him - and Michel shoots him in cold blood. In Paris, he seeks out an accomplice with whom an envelope is deposited for him. On the run from the law, he goes into hiding with Patricia, a newspaper saleswoman who wants to become a journalist. A great passion develops between the two. He tries to raise money for their joint escape to Italy. But Patricia is interrogated. And she has to decide: Career or lover?
