In 17th century Italy, Michelangelo Merisi, better known as Caravaggio, was causing a furor. In his paintings of saints, he uses prostitutes, thieves and homeless people as models, which outrages the church authorities. When Pope Paul V learns that Caravaggio is involved in a murder case, he sends his best secret agent, the Shadow, to spy on Caravaggio. As The Shadow immerses himself in Caravaggio's dazzling world, he experiences the painter's fascination with ordinary people.
