A set of six nested stories spanning time between the 19th century and a distant post-apocalyptic future. Cloud Atlas explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future. Action, mystery and romance weave through the story as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future.
The lawyer Adam Ewing learns about the indigenous people of the South Pacific and their oppression on a ship in 1850. The young musician Robert Forbisher works on his Cloud Atlas Sextet in 1931 and is inspired by Ewing's diary. Journalist Luisa Rey investigates a covered-up nuclear power plant construction failure in 1975 and also learns about Forbisher. In the present, publisher Timothy Cavendish, who wants to publish Luisa Rey's story, is mistakenly committed to a nursing home. In the near future, the young replicant Sonmi-451, whose favourite film is the adaptation of Cavendish's life story, fights for recognition of her humanity. Finally, an episode takes place in the distant future, where human civilisation has largely reverted to the Stone Age. Only a hologram containing Sonmi's records bears witness to the time long gone.
