In 1981, the Australian Tony Rinaudo came to Niger as a young agronomist to combat the growing desertifications and the misery of the population. Radical deforestation has left the land desolate and drained once fertile soil. But Rinaudo's attempts to stop the desert by planting trees fail and almost all of his seedlings die again. But then he notices a huge network of roots under the supposedly dead soil - a discovery that leads to an unprecedented greening campaign and gives countless people new hope. Oscar® winner Volker Schlöndorff dedicates his first documentary to the life's work of Tony Rinaudo, who has been practicing and spreading a simple editing technique together with African farmers for decades. In impressive images, he lets the viewers participate in how an entire region is blossoming again thanks to the passion of one man. Tony Rinaudo was honored with the Alternative Nobel Prize in 2018 for his commitment.
