Edward, a British colonial diplomat, is stationed in Mandalay in 1917. While he waits for his fiancée Molly to arrive from London, he is overcome by fear of the obligation to marry her. He sets off on an adventurous journey through Asia. He is in the jungle and in the city, among nobles and diplomats. Edward is convinced that Molly will soon follow him, and the amused certainty of their love gives him the courage to explore the unknown expanses.
