A modern Mexican classic of magical realism forms the basis of the Royal Ballet's new full-length work, which sees artistic associate Christopher Wheeldon rejoin the creative team of composer Joby Talbot and set designer Bob Crowley, who also worked on Alice in Wonderland and Winter's Tale in dance has transformed. The ballet is inspired by Laura Esquivel's novel - a gripping family saga in which the main character's emotions boil over, affecting everyone around her in surprising and dramatic ways. In this co-production with American Ballet Theatre, Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra also serves as music consultant on Talbot's newly created commissioned score, and Wheeldon worked closely with Esquivel to transform her multi-layered narrative into an entertaining and engaging ballet.
