Back in 2015, Lithuanian filmmaker Mantas Kvedaravičius visited the city of Mariupol to record the consequences of the Russian attack on the local population. In 2022, the director returned to the city, and this time there was also an official war in Mariupol during the filming. MARIUPOLIS 2 therefore focuses primarily on the civilians who are suffering as a result of the war.
Back in 2015, Lithuanian filmmaker Mantas Kvedaravičius visited the city of Mariupol to record the consequences of the Russian attack on the local population. In 2022, the director returned to the city, and this time there was officially war in Mariupol during the filming. Kvedaravičius wanted to meet again the people he had already filmed in 2015. MARIUPOLIS 2 therefore focuses primarily on the civilians who are suffering as a result of the war. They seek refuge in a former place of worship in the north-east of the city, where a large part of the film takes place. Filming took place in March 2022, while the steelworks in Mariupol was under siege, within sight of the church where the director and many others had taken shelter. Mantas Kvedaravičius was tragically unable to complete this film. While trying to flee Mariupol, he was shot dead by Russian soldiers in early April. With the support of Hanna Bilobrova, Mantas Kvedaravičius' life partner, the film editor Dounia Sichov, a friend of his, completed the film for him and for posterity. The premiere of the film took place at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2022.
