Lars Bogenius (Jonas Nay) is the undisputed star of a major German news magazine. Awarded numerous journalism prizes for his big, emotional stories, he is the hope of the publishing house and the salvation against falling circulation figures. But behind this shiny façade is a fraud. Freelance journalist Juan Romero (Elyas M'Barek) soon gets wise to him. The film is based on the book A Thousand Lines of Lies by Juan Moreno, in which he exposes the machinations of Spiegel reporter Claas Relotius.

But for the time being, the bosses of the news magazine "Chronik" consistently stand by their celebrated noble writer and try to ignore Romero's search for the truth.
