In 1877, Josephine works in a watch factory in northwestern Switzerland making balance spindles, tiny parts that provide the balance for mechanical watches. She soon feels uncomfortable with the organisation of work and property in the village and the factory and joins the anarchist workers' movement of the local watchmakers. There she meets Piotr Kropotkin. The two meet at a time when new technologies such as timekeeping, photography and the telegraph are changing the social order and anarchist discourses are grappling with rising nationalism.
