Thomas Brasch was born as a German-Jewish emigrant in England in order to move to the young DDR with his family at the beginning of the 1950s. While his father Horst was at the forefront of building up the state as deputy minister of culture, Thomas' first play was banned and he lost his place at the film academy. In 1968 he is arrested after a protest and even after his release he is unable to adapt. Finally, Thomas goes to the West with his wife, where his books become bestsellers.
