Adaptation of the best-selling novel by Paul Gallico, in which a housewife in the 1950s falls in love with a dress by Dior and would do anything to come into possession of this extravagant garment.
As a cleaning woman, Mrs. Harris (Lesley Manville) doesn't need much in life. In the 1950s, she continues to hope that her husband will return alive from the war, while her colleagues persuade her that she should finally receive her pension as a war widow. To keep her head above water, she has to work hard as a cleaner for upscale society in London. When a woman shows her a Dior dress, Mrs. Harris is shocked. She has never seen anything so beautiful in her life. She puts all her savings together, works even harder for it, and wants to buy a dress in the Dior house in Paris. But once there, it is not so easy for the sprightly woman to even get over the threshold and past the equally bristly receptionist (Isabelle Huppert).
