The Irish designer Eileen Gray built a retreat on the Côte d'Azur in 1929. Her first house is a discreet, avant-garde masterpiece. She called it E.1027, a cryptic combination of her initials and those of Jean Badovici, with whom she built it. When Le Corbusier discovered the house, he was fascinated.
